Do you have Actinic Keratosis (AK)? AKs are often called sun spots. They range in colour from skin toned to reddish brown. AKs are rough textured, dry, scaly non-healing patches on the skin that are caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, such as sunlight. If left untreated, AKs can potentially develop into skin cancer. Photodynamic Therapy, more commonly known as PDT, is a non-invasive and gentle medical treatment that is used to combat the effects of sun damage with impressive results.

How does Photodynamic Therapy work?

On the day of your treatment the Levulan will be applied to all your AK lesions. Dr. Snyman will decide the length of the incubation period (anything from 60 to 240 minutes). After that, you will be put under the BLU U for approximately 18 minutes. During the BLU U you may experience a prickling sensation. Patients describe this as being similar to sunburn. It is generally mild and resolves quickly.

What can I expect from and after treatment?

After treatment, there can be mild discomfort comparable to a sunburn. This may include redness of skin and minimal peeling. These symptoms are usually mild and last for 2-7 days depending on the severity of the Actinic Keratosis. Photodynamic therapy should be used in conjunction with your personalized skin care regime.

What are the benefits?

  • Treat an entire area of skin damage and precancerous Actinic Keratosis with a low amount of down time.
  • PDT helps with photorejuvenation as well, which means a smoother skin and better overall improved appearance, tone, color, and texture.
  • No scarring
  • PDT is a very well tolerated, low discomfort, noninvasive procedure to help reduce sun damage
