Just beneath the surface of the skin lie hundreds of tiny glands called sebaceous glands. Their function is to collect and excrete an oily substance called sebum to keep the skin lubricated. Over-active production of these oil glands contributes to the development of acne. PDT treatment works by shrinking the skin’s oil glands. Dr. Snyman recommends PDT as a way of treating moderate to severe cystic acne.

How does PDT work?

A PDT session is a non-invasive therapy that utilizes light treatments along with a topical application of a medication to the affected area. The medication is left on the skin for a recommended amount of time and then exposed to a light. Besides shrinking the skin’s oil glands, it may also kill bacteria that cause acne breakouts and normalize the shedding of dead skin cells within the follicle.

What can I expect after treatment?

After treatment, there can be mild discomfort comparable to a sunburn. This may include redness of skin and minimal peeling. These symptoms are usually mild and last for 2-7 days depending on the severity of the acne. Photodynamic therapy should be used in conjunction with your personalized skin care regime.
